Unlike other streaming services, Hulu creates a lot of mini-series that are designed to run only for a single season. However, throughout the service’s existence, there have been several great Hulu TV shows that could have gone on for longer if they hadn’t been canceled after just one season, often to the audience’s chagrin.

1 Spooked

Web series have got it harder than traditional TV shows or even those available on streaming services. They often don’t run for long. Spooked premiered in 2014, and it’s no exception to this rule even though it works with the popular topic of ghosts and ghost hunting. The four-episode series centers on a team of ghost hunters who investigate and explore various supernatural occurrences.

Despite the series’ above-average rating of 6.9 on IMDb, it hasn’t gotten a second season, and it’s unlikely that it ever will. That makes it easy for the audience to finish watching the show fast, but also difficult for the fans who would like even more content. The possibilities of ghost-hunting stories are almost endless, so if Spooked ever gets renewed, it’s unlikely it will run out of material to work with anytime soon.

2 Dimension 404

Anthology series aren’t limited by the same set of characters, and they can tell a new story with a different cast in each episode. As such, they have no clear limit. As long as there are solid ideas coming, the show can go on. Some viewers compared Dimension 404 to Black Mirror thanks to its futuristic settings and science fiction themes that serve to point out things that are wrong with society.

Unlike Black Mirror, however, Dimension 404 wasn’t as fortunate, and it got only a single season made up of six episodes in total in 2017. The series has the power to make the audience think about the future, and it stars familiar faces such as Patton Oswalt and Lea Michele. Despite this, Hulu didn’t renew it for a second season even though it garnered positive ratings online.

3 Resident Advisors

A sitcom is one of the most popular TV genres. That means that each year, dozens of new sitcoms premiere, but they also have a higher chance of getting canceled after just the pilot or the first season. Resident Advisors is set in a place that will be familiar to many of the viewers: dorms. It shows that school life can be complicated and that students have often got a lot on their plates, both in terms of their personal life and in their studies. Some of the situations presented in the show will no doubt be familiar to the audience.

However, school sitcoms are a dime a dozen and Resident Advisors didn’t charm the audience enough to warrant a second season despite its solid online ratings. The series is still worth trying out though. With seven episodes, it’s easy to watch it fast, and for new students, it could also serve as a guide of what (not) to do when in dorms.

4 There’s… Johnny!

Another series with only seven episodes in total is the 2017 show There’s… Johnny! Set in Los Angeles in the 1970s, the series has a pleasant retro feeling to it, not entirely dissimilar to the likes of Quentin Tarantino’s movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). It takes the viewers to a place where not so many people get the chance to look: behind the scenes of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. More specifically, the series focuses on Andy, a 19-year-old boy who moves to Los Angeles and gets a job working on the show.

The series is one of the workplace comedies that has an effortless feeling to it, it doesn’t come across as staged. The buzzing, lively world of The Tonight Show is captivating, and Andy is the best guide to it that the audience could possibly ask for. The series manages to reflect important cultural and societal events of the 1970s, but it never loses focus of its primary purpose, which is to entertain the audience.

5 Helstrom

Superhero shows are popular but just like with sitcoms, there’s no guarantee they’ll get renewed for a second season. Helstrom tells the story of two siblings that decide to fight crime together. The series offers a lot of tension as well as action and allows the audience to get to know the heroes well.

It ends with a slight cliffhanger, which made it even more frustrating for the fans when it became obvious that the series wouldn’t get a second season. Marvel Television, so unless another production company decides to pick up the series and renew it, fans of the show are unlikely to see Ana and Daimon returning to their TV screens anytime soon.
